The great British day out, come rain or shine we tend to make the most of it even if it does mean sitting in the car and eating our sandwiches while it pours with rain. Nowadays though we have more leisure time and this has been catered for with indoor fun centres for children and outdoor theme parks for children and adults alike. With access to the internet we only need to google ‘things to do in Britain’ and it brings a host of information to our fingertips; some paid entrance, some free. There are parks, walks, woods to play in, or search for wildlife, Heritage centres, usually with shops and tea rooms, churches and cathedrals to visit. Some country houses have gardens and free parklands to wander in. Garden centres can also be found here and they have expanded from just being places to buy plants. Nowadays, they usually have tea-rooms, garden/conservatory furniture, books, toys, barbecue equipment, lighting and some give evening lectures. Everyone enjoys fresh air and a break from work. In fact we need it to recharge our batteries. It could be a day out with the family or an intimate, romantic day out for two. It needn’t be expensive, you could take a basic picnic (another British favourite) or be a little more upmarket with wine, champagne and salmon. Though most of us would not be quite as extravagant as the Victorians, their picnics were huge and included taking staff along too. What better way to spend a day in the sun, than lounging on a rug by a stream, listening to skylarks singing and knowing the whole day is yours to do as you please. A day at the seaside, building sandcastles and eating ice-cream with flecks of sand in it. Searching rock pools and watching boats unload their catch. A walk along old roman roads. Get out your maps, take a compass, mobile phone and tell someone where you are going just in case you get lost. Explore the area near your home, uncover local history, walk along the canals. All of this is free and can be fun even in the rain. Visit farmers markets, where an abundance of fruit, vegetables, dairy produce, meats, fish and jams can be found. Take a look at working farms, you can sometimes help feed the animals. Some parks have cattle, hens, pigs, ducks and birthing pens where children can touch the animals. |
